SOCIAL MEDIA AND ME

According to Whatls.com, social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration (Wigmore, 2015). Websites and applications dedicated to forums, microblogging, social networking, social bookmarking, social curation, and wikis are among the different types of social media (Wigmore, 2015).

When I started my study in Finland, I spent much time on social networking (Facebook, Skype and Viber) in order to keep in touch and update my activities with parents and friends. Due to intensive schedule and heavy amount of group works, it was an inconvenience for me to have meetings regularly; therefore, Facebook page was a choice to update information and have a quick discussion among group members. There are many functions in Facebook supporting our study. Recently, I have tried to not accessing to any social networking (especially Facebook) if it is not necessary since it made me feel addicted and consumed much time per day (around 3 to 4 hours) which was just for following others news, commenting posts and taking pictures. Linkedin is another social media which I use to connect to other students and companies' job advertisements.

Personally, the use of social media makes our life simpler; however, it also has negative effects so being aware of them will help us to use social media in a right manner.

  1. Sadly, the negative effects of social media are getting more and more common these days, when people are staring at their little smartphones only and not really talking with each other that much anymore. :/

  2. Social media has two sides, even though it has made connecting with others much simpler it has also brought us furder a part in real life. You make a good point about social media's negative effects. I admire your motivation not to acces social media if it's not necessary.

  3. You are so right! These social media sites can become procrastination tools very quickly! I foresee in the future there being addiction recovery centers for people who have lost touch with reality because they spent all their time on social media and forgot that life exists outside of it. Especially the upcoming generations...they will not know what is like to live without these form of entertainment. As working tools, however, they can be quite valuable!

  5. I really agree with that people need to use social media in right manner. As for me, when I started to use facebook, I always chats with friends on there and spent lots of time. It was effected my study and work efficiency a lot. Then I controlled myself and settled limited time on using social media. Therefore, we can not deny there has many of advantages of social media, but the positive ways to control and use these tools are necessary.

  6. Thank you for your comments :)

Yes, spending too much time on social media is not only affecting your real social networking but also your time. Despite them, they have also good sides depending on the users.

  7. sometimes I also feel that I could be doing something more constructive instead of spending my time on Facebook. but sometimes I do not have better options, for instance when I am in the bus or late at night.
