My use of social media

I have accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Whatsapp. A few years ago I did register to Twitter but I think I used it only once. I didn't find it interesting enough.

I use Facebook mainly for keeping up with schoolwork event invitations. Lately I've been thinking about leaving from Facebook. The only thing stopping me is that almost all my friends live in different parts of Finland nowdays and FB is the only place where we can easily create and arrange events and meetings with each others. I joined Facebook when I was in high-school, I think the year was probably 2007, and I used to write many updates every week. Then, as the time passed by, I only updated once every two weeks, then once a month and finally I just stopped. I grew up and realized that there's no point of updating every little thing that happens to me. Now, I usually post something only if something really special happens. For example, when I saw an old lady walking down the street with a pet parakeet on leash, I wrote it down to Facebook. Sometimes I press the like-button on someone else's posts but usually I just scroll down the front page.

Instagram I use daily. I like to photograph and sometimes I share pictures in Instagram. Mainly I use it to look for pretty and amazing pictures that photographers take and of course I follow my friends and family. I don't really get the whole selfie-thing, so my Instagram account is focused on pictures about nature.

Whatsapp I use daily and it has pretty much replaced texting. I use it for communicating with friends, family and schoolmates.

I have a (bad) habit of scrolling down social media when I'm bored. One day I was watching TV and noticed that every time commercial came on, I took my phone and went to Facebook. I didn't even read anything, I just scrolled down with my thumb. That made me realize how all these apps are just a way to relieve boredom. I made a promise to myself, that every time I feel bored I'm going to take a book and read instead. Let's see how it goes!

Work and school

I study social sciences and I also work in the field. I use Facebook and Whatsapp at schoolwork. It's easy to share thoughts, difficulties. questions and assignments with schoolmates on Facebook and Whatsapp. At work I don't use social media at all. I work with teens with mental and physical difficulties, so I can't use social media at all.

I'm not sure how much employers at my field of work use places like LinkedIn, but I've been thinking about making there a profile.

So all and all, I do use social media, sometimes maybe too much even tough I'm not very active user.

  1. Hi Meeri. You are certainly well-connected and making great use of social media tools. Being in an older generation, I find all of these tools rather confusing, which is one reason I need to take this course. I learned a lot about the different social media tools through your post...will have to check out the different ones you mentions. I do use Pinterest, but I didnt even consider it part of social media. Now I do! Thanks!

  2. I also spend my time in social media sometimes when I'm bored. And I don't really read anything, I just scroll too. Sometimes I have also thought leaving Facebook, but not very seriously. If I feel I don't want to spend my time there I just don't log in.

  3. I also use Facebook most in my working life because nowadays a lot of people tend to have Facebook account. I have to admit that sometimes I want to leave Facebook but I think I still need Facebook to look for materials as well as jobs.

  4. I also was thinking about leaving Facebook, but as you mention it has some essential role in connection with friends and make school work. That is why I cannot leave Facebook totally. As you mention I also used Facebook when I am bored, I would rather do other things many times than staying on Facebook.
